CRISFIELD — The historic U.S. Army Air Force P-520 crash boat has a special weekend planned Aug. 27-28 for Wounded Warriors and Gold Star families.

From 7 to 9 p.m. that Saturday there will be a hanger dance under the pavilion at Somers Cove Marina featuring music from the 1940s. On Sunday those who reserve a spot will be taken on a cruise (rsvp by contacting Lewis Palmer at lewis.palmer@louisvillenavelmuseuminc.org).

The public is also invited to tour the boat starting at 11 a.m. on the 27th and 10 a.m. on the 28th until 4 p.m.

Now docked at Somers Cove Marina the restored 85 ft. rescue boat built in 1944 is the last of its size still operating. Originally stationed in California while on active duty during World War II and the Korean War it was used to rescue and aid air crews downed over water.

It had recently been based in Cambridge but following a generator failure and the subsequent emergency response June 23 it was decided that it would be permanently based in Crisfield. In addition, it is now part of the Veterans Heritage Foundation, having transitioned from the Louisville Naval Museum Inc. Follow updates on Facebook.
