Become a Delmarva woodland steward through Extension, Md. Forest Service program

Posted

SALISBURY — The University of Maryland Extension and Maryland Forest Service along with partners in Delaware and Virginia will host a volunteer training program for woodland stewardship this fall.

The Delmarva Woodland Stewards initiative was created last year as an opportunity for landowners and wildlife enthusiasts to learn about and get involved in forest and wildlife management to conserve our woodlands.

This training program will consist of six weekly virtual meetings each Tuesday from Oct. 4 to Nov. 8, with one Saturday field visit Nov. 5. Applications are due July 1.

This course is a mix of self-study with weekly online and an in-person field trip.  Every week participants are assigned 3 hours of video lectures or readings, and will join a weekly online session for 1.5 hours to review the material and discuss the topic with a local expert. We will host an all-day field trip to local sites highlighting the forest management practices discussed in class.

The tentative agenda is as follows:

October 4, 2022:     Welcome & Introductions
October 11, 2022:     Introduction to Forestry
October 18, 2022:     Managing Woodlands for Wildlife
October 25, 2022:     Water Quality in Woodlands
November 1, 2022:     Prescribed Fire for Management Goals
November 5, 2022:     Field Trip to Woodlands with Applied Management
November 8, 2022:     Wrap-up and Volunteering Action Plan

Each participant is expected to contribute $35 toward the cost of their training plus a $15 background check which is required for University of Maryland Extension volunteers. The cost of the program has been generously subsidized with the support of a Landscape Scale Restoration Grant from the USDA Forest Service grant awarded to the Maryland Forest Service.
