DOVER — The Delaware Division of Small Business is highlighting ways to support small businesses during the month of May, which is National Small Business Month.

The first week of the month (April 30 – May 6) is recognized as National Small Business Week. 

“Small businesses are the backbone of Delaware’s economy. They bring jobs and a sense of community to every corner of our state,” said Gov. John Carney.

“They’re also an economic engine. In Fiscal Year 2022, small businesses employed 56% of the state’s workforce, and generated 13.8 billion in wages. I encourage all Delawareans to ‘shop small’ this Small Business Week.”

Governor Carney signed a proclamation acknowledging April 30 – May 6 as Small Business Week in Delaware.

There are several reasons to support one of Delaware’s 27-thousand small businesses. They offer unique products and services that may not be found at larger stores, offer more personalized customer service by building relationships with their customers, and serve as hubs for innovation and creativity.

Small business owners are more likely to take risks and try new ideas, which can lead to the development of new products and services, as well as new business models.

“Our small business community continues to promote economic diversity while forging opportunities through the creation of new industries and markets,” said Secretary of State Jeffrey Bullock.

Additionally, small businesses are often involved in their local communities. They sponsor local events, donate to charity, and provide jobs and other economic opportunities in their local areas.

“Supporting small businesses in Delaware can have positive economic, social, and environmental impacts on the local community,” said Delaware Division of Small Business Director Regina Mitchell. “With small businesses accounting for 98% of all businesses in Delaware, it’s easy to show them your appreciation.”

Ways to support small business in Delaware include purchasing goods and services from local stores, companies or farmers markets, eating at local restaurants, purchasing gift cards from them for friends and family, and sharing the name, webpage or social media account of favorites on social profiles. 

Delaware Division of Small Business is supporting small businesses during Small Business Week and Month by creating a social media toolkit and hosting a social media webinar for small business owners with Delaware TikTok sensation Alexis Harris of First State Destinations on May 9. 

Additionally, Delaware Division of Small Business has created a landing page on its website with information and resources for small business owners at de.gov/smallbizmonth.
