NEWARK — The first seven minutes of the game belonged to Delaware State.

But the rest of the night belonged to Delaware.

And that was more than enough for the Blue Hens to run away to a 74-52 victory over the Hornets in women’s basketball at the Carpenter Center on Wednesday.

The victory was the second in a row for Delaware (5-2) in a series it now leads, 13-1.

DelState (2-5), though, stormed out to a 15-2 lead to start the contest. Four different Hornets scored during the opening run.

DelState still led, 19-18, with 6:04 left in the second quarter. The game was then tied at 20-20 a minute later.

But Delaware finished the half on a 15-8 run and never trailed again. The Hens netted the first 10 points of the second half to open up a 45-28 advantage and never looked back.

Four players scored in double figures for Delaware. Jewel Smalls netted a game-high 18 points after sinking 6-of-12 three-pointers.

Makayla Pippin (15), Klarke Sconiers (12) and Nakiyah Mays-Prince (10) also led the Hens with Pippin adding 11 rebounds for a double-double.

Densiha Wilson scored a team-high 15 points for the Hornets with Tyshonne Tollie adding 14. The two players combined to hit 10-of-20 shots from the floor.

Savannah Brooks scored 10 points for DelState, which went just 1-of-12 from three-point range and committed 19 turnovers.

MEN, St. Francis-Brooklyn 81, Delaware State 73: The Hornets stormed back from a 20-point deficit but couldn’t get over the hump in the non-conference road loss.

DelState (1-6) whittled the Terriers’ lead down to as little as two points three different times in the final five minutes but never got any closer. The Hornets fell behind 46-26 in the first minute of the second half.

Kyrie Staten netted a team-high 16 points for Delaware State with Cameron Stitt adding 12. Ten players scored two points or more for the Hornets.

Martaz Robinson tallied seven assists and 11 rebounds. DelState made only 2-of-12 three-point shots.

St. Francis (3-4) put six players in double figures and went 8-for-21 from beyond the arc.
