Drug charges result from visit to Vaughn Correctional Center in Smyrna

SMYRNA — Aaron Cain, 23, of Wilmington, was arrested for allegedly bringing drugs into the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center on Saturday.

According to Delaware State Police Sgt. India Sturgis, at approximately 11:10 a.m., troopers responded to the prison at 1181 Paddock Road for a drug investigation initiated by the Department of Correction.

Police said Mr. Cain had been observed passing a small, concealed object to an inmate at the facility during a scheduled visit.

A search of the inmate revealed approximately 29.06 grams of suspected marijuana, police said. A search of Mr. Cain located 69.76 grams of suspected marijuana on his person and 7.68 grams of suspected marijuana in his vehicle. Mr. Cain was taken into custody and transported to Troop 9, Odessa.

He was charged with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, promoting prison contraband, second-degree conspiracy, possession of marijuana other than personal-use quantity and possession of marijuana in a personal-use quantity. He was arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 11 and released on a $3,700 secured bond.

The inmate was charged with misdemeanor promoting prison contraband and possession of marijuana other than personal-use quantity. He was arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 11 and released on his own recognizance for the new charges. He remains in custody at Vaughn Correctional Center.
