Athlete of the Week: Kylse Wilson, Laurel football

Posted

Laurel High football Kylse Wilson was voted the State News Athlete of the Week for the second time this year.

The senior ran for 198 yards and four touchdowns on 22 carries in the Bulldogs’ 49-14 victory over Tatnall in the DIAA Class 1A state semifinals on Friday night. The victory puts defending champion Laurel in next Saturday’s state finals, where it will face St. Elizabeth again.

A first-team all-district running back and kick returner, Wilson has run for 1,461 yards and 24 TDs on 139 carries this fall. He has three more touchdowns and 48 yards on four receptions with four TDs and 651 return yards.

“Kylse has grown so much in his time with this program,” said Laurel coach Joey Jones. “His abilities on the field are simply a reflection of the mature man he’s turned into. It has truly been fun watching his abilities take over and to be the positive person he is on a daily basis with this team.

“Looking forward to seeing him compete again on the biggest stage next weekend.”

The Athlete of the Week is nominated and chosen by our readers. The nominating period starts at 2 p.m. on Friday and ends at noon on Monday. A voting period follows from 5 p.m. Monday through 5 p.m. Wednesday.

This process is performed exclusively online. When nominating an athlete, please include name, school and sport as well as a photo and brief description of why he or she deserves that week’s honor.

All nominations must be high school varsity athletes and come from high schools within Kent or Sussex counties. The winner appears in print and online each Friday.
