DOVER – Hazardous weather has brought sporadic power outages to the state today.

The primary concern has been wind gusts throughout the day today, as Delaware Electric Cooperative reported 45 power outages – 43 mostly west of Camden – with another two outages north of Seaford at around 5 p.m.

None of the outages lasted much more than an hour and a half and as of 5:45 p.m. the only two outages remaining were the pair near Seaford.

At just after 6 p.m., Delmarva Power spokesman Timothy Stokes said a little more than 300 members had impacted service in New Castle County. Crews were on site and on the way to scenes, he said. Mr. Stokes said he was not aware of any outages in Kent and Sussex counties at the time.  

The University of Delaware Environmental Reporting Station reported peak wind gusts of 34.5 mph in Townsend, 31.4 mph in Seaford and 29.7 mph in Lewes today.

C.R. McLeod, spokesman for the Delaware Department of Transportation, described the wind as “really whipping” and said multiple traffic signals were dark from north of Townsend Boulevard to at least Scarborough Road in the Dover area as of 5:30 p.m.

The outages were caused by a blown transformer in Leipsic, and he said there was no estimated time of restoration as the city’s public works department responded.

Mr. McLeod said Dover police were monitoring multiple intersections.

Delaware State Police spokeswoman Master Cpl. Heather Pepper said  “We have not been advised of any responses by DSP for weather-related issues.”

The National Weather Service is calling for a 30% chance of rain, mainly before 11 tonight, with low temperatures around 51 degrees.

It is expected to continue to be breezy, with a west wind around 15 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch is possible
