Smyrna schools put in modified lockdown

SMYRNA — Four schools were placed in a “modified” lockdown status for just over a half hour early Tuesday afternoon as nearby Smyrna police searched for a man suffering a mental health incident.

North Smyrna and Clayton elementary schools were in lockdown from 12:05 p.m. to 12:41 p.m., along with Smyrna Middle School and Smyrna High School, district superintendent Patrik Williams said. Administration alerted all families connected to the schools, he said.

In modified lockdown, Mr. Williams said, movement is permitted inside a school but nobody can go outside.

Smyrna police spokesman Sgt. Brian Donner said the man in crisis was located and taken for a mental health evaluation.

No one at the schools was ever in danger, Sgt. Donner said.
