SMYRNA — Delaware State Police have identified the victim who died during a fatal two-vehicle collision on Thursday, as John “Tony” Estus, 82, of Smyrna.

Officials say he was properly restrained in the passenger seat of a 2006 Ford Taurus, operated by an 82-year-old Smyrna woman, also properly restrained, who was transported to the area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The crash occurred around 5:42 p.m. on U.S. 13 at the intersection of Spring Meadow Drive and Hickory Ridge Road, according to a police report.

It said the Ford was turning left onto Spring Meadow Drive with the turn signal on, when a 2019 Chevrolet Equinox approached the intersection going Northbound on U.S. 13 and struck the right side of the Ford. Officials said a 70-year-old Clayton woman operating the Equinox was also properly restrained and transported to the local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

U.S. 13 was shut down for nearly 3.5 hours according to police. The collision is under investigation by the Delaware State Police Troop 3 Collision Reconstruction Unit. Any individuals who witnessed the crash are asked to contact Cpl/3 Joseph Lane by calling 302-698-8457.
