Roundup: Dover's Brengle finds way to win at Australian Open

Posted

When Madison Brengle wins a big tennis match, she usually does it in her own style.

But that was especially true of the Dover native’s opening-round victory in the Australian Open on Sunday night.

The 59th-ranked Brengle beat No. 102 Dayana Yastremska by the see-saw score of 6-1, 0-6, 5-0 in the women’s singles bracket of the Grand Slam event. Yastremska retired from the match before the final game.

The stats that drew the most attention were Yastremska’s 60 unforced errors compared to just one winner for Brengle. Yastremska had 31 winners.

But it all added up to a win for Brengle, who next has to face 13th-seeded Naomi Osaka. The 31-year-old Brengle has faced the 24-year-old Osaka only once before, beating her in a an ITF match in 2013.

Brengle, who shook off a leg injury suffered in a warmup tournament last week, has now advanced past the first round of the Australian Open five times since 2015. But she hasn’t reached the third round since 2016.

The 5-foot-10, 175-pound Arkansas native announced his decision on social media this weekend.

“After an amazing visit, much prayers and a humbling conversation with my family, I would like to say I will be continuing my academic and athletic career to the University of Delaware!!,” he posted.

As a freshman last fall, Witcher pulled in a school Division I record 80 catches for 1,120 yards and 12 touchdowns. He was named an FCS All-American by AP and finished seventh in the Jerry Rice Award list voting for top freshman.

College basketball

WOMEN, Delaware 79, Northeastern 60: Jasmine Dickey netted 31 points to lead four Blue Hens in double figures in the CAA victory on Sunday.

Delaware (3-0 CAA, 9-4 overall) led by only four before out-scoring the Huskies, 31-16, in the fourth quarter to pick up their third win in a row. The Hens have won six straight over the Huskies (2-2 CAA, 8-6 overall).

“I love this team because we are resilient,” said UD coach Natasha Addair. “We looked up at the score, at no point were we ever wavering or were we ever not playing not to lose. We had to make sure we had to finish it playing Delaware basketball; it was getting stops that we needed, finishing plays, knocking down free throws and rebounding.”

Dickey sank 14-of-17 four shots and grabbed 10 rebounds to post her fifth double-double of the season. Ty Battle followed with 15 points and 19 rebounds while adding four steals.

Tyi Skinner and Paris McBride (six rebounds) each added 12 points.

The Hens close out their three-game homestand on Tuesday with a 6 p.m. game against James Madison.
