DOVER — There have been a little more than 2,100 breakthrough COVID-19 cases in Delaware since Dec. 1, 2021, among individuals who received a booster/additional dose of vaccine, the Delaware Division of Public Health said.

This data represents about 0.8% of the 249,233 individuals who have received booster doses as of Monday at 6 p.m. DPH also noted that this data is preliminary and subject to change upon further review.

DPH director Dr. Karyl Rattay said at this week’s COVID-19 press briefing that 90% of Delaware’s COVID-19 hospitalizations had not received boosters, while 70% were unvaccinated.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now recommends boosters for adults five months after their second dose of the two-dose Pfizer or Moderna series and two months after the one-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine. Those ages 12-17 are also eligible for a Pfizer booster five months after their second dose, as Pfizer is the only vaccine approved for that group.

A breakthrough case is defined by DPH as testing positive for COVID-19 after having been fully vaccinated for two weeks or more.

Individuals who had been administered the Johnson & Johnson vaccine posted the highest percentage of breakthrough cases, per DPH data as of Dec. 27, 2021. Among Delawareans, 2.34% of those who received Johnson & Johnson registered a breakthrough case — 1,249 breakthroughs among 53,298 fully vaccinated.

Pfizer recipients recorded the most breakthrough cases, likely due to the fact that it is the most popular vaccine in the state. For Delawareans who received Pfizer, 5,880 of 343,831 fully vaccinated individuals had a breakthrough case (1.71%), while 2,729 of the 226,667 who were vaccinated with Moderna registered breakthroughs (1.2%) as of Dec. 27, 2021.

In DPH’s most recent update, it reported that, as of Jan. 7, there have been 13,166 breakthrough cases, which represents 2.3% of Delawareans who have been fully vaccinated.

DPH added that there are no immediate plans to change the definition of fully vaccinated. It is monitoring CDC guidance on the subject and will reevaluate if CDC makes any alterations.
