Middletown to meet Smyrna in Delaware 3A state football finals

Middletown High is headed to a DIAA football state championship game for the third straight year.

The second-seeded Cavaliers earned a spot in the state finals after downing No. 3 Salesianum, 33-15, in the DIAA Class 3A state semifinals on Saturday evening.

Middletown (9-1) will take on top-seeded Smyrna (10-2) in the inaugural Class 3A title game Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in Delaware Stadium. The two programs also met in the 2016 and ‘17 Division I state championship games with the Eagles winning both times.

This year, the Cavs beat Smyrna, 28-14, on Sept. 17. Middletown is 3-7 in state finals since 2007.

Against Sallies, Middletown led only 18-15 in the fourth quarter before scoring the game’s final 15 points.

Woodbridge to face Auks: Second-seeded Woodbridge High will take on No. 1 Archmere in the DIAA Class 2A football state finals Saturday.

The Blue Raiders (12-0) and Auks (12-0) will square off at 11 a.m. at Delaware Stadium.

Archmere earned its second straight appearance in the title game after downing No. 5 Delaware Military, 20-16, on Saturday in the semifinals. The Auks beat Woodbridge, 31-22, in last year’s Division II semifinals.

Over the past two seasons Archmere is 20-1 with its only setback a 42-6 loss to Howard in last year’s state finals.

The Auks haven’t won a state championship since 1982 when they won their third title in four years.

Laurel gets St. Elizabeth in finals: Top-seeded Laurel will face No. 2 St. Elizabeth in the first DIAA Class 1A state finals Saturday.

The contest is slated for 6 p.m. in Delaware Stadium.

The Vikings advanced to the title game with a 33-0 victory over No. 5 Tatnall on Saturday night.

Girls’ basketball

Smyrna 58, Delcastle 55: The Eagles opened up a 17-6 first-quarter advantage before holding off the Cougars in the DMA tournament on Friday night.

Freshman Kai Burnette finished with 19 points for Smyrna with senior Deleon Foster adding 10.

Worcester Prep, Md. 46, Indian River 35: The Indians couldn’t hold a 13-10 first-quarter lead in dropping their season opener on Friday night.

Boys’ basketball

Worcester Prep, Md. 43, Indian River 33: The Indians fell in their season opener on Friday night.

College volleyball

Boston College 3, Delaware State 0: The Hornets’ first appearance in a national championship tournament ended in a loss in the opening round of the National Invitational Volleyball Championship. The scores were 28-26, 25-16 and 25-21.

The loss ends the Hornets’ historic season with a 26-5 overall record, the most wins in team history, while the Eagles (17-16) advance to the second round of the tournament.

All-MEAC first-team honoree Alondra Maldonado led Delaware State with eight kills and Valeria Otero had a team-high 10 digs.

The score was tied 14 times in the first set. The Hornets led 22-20 on a kill by Kristi Gomez and was one point away from the set win after pulling ahead 24-22 on a winner by Otero.

But Boston College answered with back-to-back points to even the score at 24.

Delaware State again was a point away from the set win after regaining the lead 26-25 on a kill by Maldonado, but the Eagles took the last three points to secure the first game.

Delaware State captured a share of the MEAC regular-season title for the first time since 1987 and set a team mark with 16 consecutive wins. The Hornets also posted a perfect record at home for the first time in team history (13-0), winning 39 of 40 sets played in Memorial Hall this season.

College basketball

Dover grad Davis nets 29: Dover High grad Eden Davis scored a career-high 29 points as the Young Harris College men’s basketball team defeated Morehouse, 83-78, on Saturday.

Davis is in his first season at the NCAA Division II program after transferring in the off-season.

MEN, Longwood 78, Delaware State 58: The Hornets (2-6) fell behind 34-27 at halftime before dropping the nonconference decision on Saturday.

Myles Carter (16), D’Marco Baucum (13) and Dominik Fragala (11) all finished in double figures for DelState, which fell to the Lancers for the third time in three all-time meetings.

The Hornets tallied the game’s first six points but Longwood finished the first half on an 11-4 run to break a 23-23 tie. DelState trailed by only two at one point, 47-45, in the second only to have the Lancers stretch their advantage to as many as 23.

WOMEN, St. Peter’s 77, Delaware State 50: Joy Watkins netted 17 points for the Hornets (0-6) in their home loss on Saturday.

Zoe Holmes (11 points, 11 rebounds) added a double-double for DelState with Sianny Sanchez-Oliver adding 10 points.

St. Peter’s (2-5) outscored the Hornets, 24-11, in the third quarter to open up a 61-39 advantage.
