SMYRNA — Two 53-year-old Wilmington residents died after a motorcycle they were riding was struck by another vehicle on DuPont Parkway on Sunday, authorities said.

According to Delaware State Police, Charles Green lost control of the motorcycle at approximately 7:15 p.m., and it began sliding on its side. It was then struck by an unknown vehicle, causing it to be redirected into the Smyrna Rest Area, where it stopped. The other vehicle left the scene, Senior Cpl. Leonard DeMalto said.

Both Mr. Green and his passenger, Michele Baxendale, were transported to an area hospital with serious injuries, police said. They were both later pronounced dead.

The driver, make and model of the second vehicle remain unidentified, Cpl. DeMalto said.

DuPont Parkway was closed for approximately four hours, while it was cleared and the collision was investigated.

The Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate. Troopers ask witnesses to contact Sgt. J. Jefferson at 302-365-8484. Information may also be provided to Delaware Crime Stoppers at 800-TIP-3333 or here.
