Local roundup: Polytech boys down Caesar Rodney; Cape Henlopen girls top Sussex Tech

Polytech High built a 23-point advantage going into the fourth quarter before registering a 73-53 victory over Caesar Rodney in Henlopen Northboys’ basketball on Tuesday night.

The win kept the Panthers unbeaten in the North at 10-0, 10-2 overall.
Kyle Gamber (17 points), Dorell Little (16), Xavier Brewington (15) and Brett Shelton-Hoskins (14) all scored in double figures for Polytech.

The Riders were paced by Khalil Kemp (11) and Isaiah Alston (10).

Dover 78, Smyrna 72, OT: The Senators out-scored the Eagles, 11-5, in overtime to snap a two-game losing streak.

Senior Jaheim Harrell netted 29 points for Dover with Kendall Abrams and Noah Allen both contributing 14. Harrell went 10-of-14 from the foul line while the Senators went 25-of-40 as a team.

Obinna Coleman and Daniel Lerro had 20 points apiece for Smyrna. Logan Steele added 11.

Seaford 79, Lake Forest 44: The Blue Jyas remained unbeaten in the South aftre opening up a 44-25 halftime lead.

Brent Ricketts netted 27 points for Seaford with Kashmeir Wise scoring 14 and Makel Hubbard scoring 13.

Calif Spencer had 14 points for the Spartans.

Woodbridge 93, Sussex Academy 29: The Blue Raiders opened up a 61-13 halftime lead before registering the Henlopen South win.

Senior guard Ci-Atrick Stones finished with 32 points for Woodbridge, which also got double-digit scoring from Bruce Mosley (19), Jeremy Fletcher (15) and Isaiah Giles (10).

Quentin Bowman had 13 points to lead the Seahawks.

Indian River 56, Delmar 46: The Indians trailed by one before using a 22-11 third-quarter run to take control.

Brendon Bradford had a game-high 19 for IR while Jamaal Jones added 14. Bradford hit four of the Indians’ seven three-pointers.

The Wildcats got 12 points each from Takai Hugee and Emanuel Ortiz Villaman.

Delmarva Christian 61, Gunston 41: The Royals improved to 8-3 with the victory.

Conrad 70, First State Military 28: Eight players scored for the Bulldogs in the Diamon State loss.

Girls’ basketball

Polytech 41, Caesar Rodney 39: In a Henlopen North game that was tied, 20-20, at halftime, the Panthers edged the Riders to improve to 9-4 overall.

Freshman Sierra Henry netted 20 points for Polytech with Kallie Hopkins collecting 12 points, 11 rebounds and four assists for her 13th double-double of the season.

Jaylyn Fuhr tallied 12 points for the Riders.

Smyrna 64, Dover 51: The Eagles built a 50-37 lead after three quarters before improving to 8-4.

Sophomore Kai Burnette netted a game-high 23 points for her second straight 20-point game. Jayde Rivera added 16 points after hitting three three-pointers.

Cape Henlopen 64, Sussex Tech 27: The Vikings started the contest on a 28-4 run before remaining unbeaten in the North.

Freshman Amalia Frutchman (19 points, 4 blocks), Faith Re (14 points), Ja’Onna Lee (11 points, 11 rebounds) and Mya Maull (11 points, 4 assists) all paced Cape Henlopen.

Delmar 39, Indian River 26: The Wildcats evened their record at 5-5 with the Henlopen South win.

Seaford 49, Lake Forest 47: The Blue Jays out-scored the Spartans, 11-9, in the fourth quarter to pull out the South win.

Sophomore Amira Tingle had 27 points, sinking 11 of Seaford’s 19 field goals. Kimora Cornish-Baine added 13 points.

Kirja Hickman had 17 points for Lake Forest with Zion McKnight scoring 10.

Woodbridge 65, Sussex Academy 6: Reghan Robinson (5 assists, 4 steals) and Payton Keeler (5 assists) tallied 22 points apiece as the first-place Blue Raiders raised their record to 10-0 in the South.

De’Asya Jones added 11 points for Woodbridge.

Sussex Central 43, Milford 13: The Golden Knights picked up their second Henlopen North win of the season.

McKenna Boyle scored a game-high 16 points for Central while Blair Darmstadter added 11.

College basketball

MEN, Delaware State 88, South Carolina State 85, OT: The Hornets snapped a 40-game losing streak against Division I opponents by pulling out the victory on Monday night.

The Hornets (1-4 MEAC, 2-16 overall) overcame a 39-26 halftime deficit to post their first win over a Division I opponent since beating Morgan State on March 6, 2021.

Delaware State out-scored the Bulldogs, 17-14, in the five-minute OT period. The Hornets never trailed in overtime, leading by as many as eight points.

DSU tied the game at 71-71 when Brandon Stone sank a pair of free throws with 21 seconds left in regulation.

Khyrie Staten (19 points), Stone (18), Martaz Robinson (17) and Jevin Muniz (16) all finished in double figures for the Hornets. Corey Perkins added seven assists and six points.

South Carolina State (0-5 MEAC, 3-18) led for over 36 minutes of the contest.

College football

Another honor for UD’s Buchanan: Delaware linebacker Johnny Buchanan has been named to the Walter Camp FCS All-America Team.

The selection marks the seventh All-America nod for Buchanan this season.
Buchanan led FCS with 150 total tackles. In 13 games in 2022, Buchanan had eight games with at least 10 tackles and five games with at least 15 stops.
