How cold is too cold for recess? Somerset County school board asked to decide

WESTOVER — When is the weather unsuitable for primary and elementary schools students to go outside for recess?

Somerset County Public Schools’ Student Health and Wellness Service Policy 600-3 as amended on the recommendation of Deputy Superintendent Tom Davis states, “outdoor recess will be available each day school is in session for a full day” for pre-K through fifth grade but not when the temperature is 32 degrees or below, or if there is any precipitation, or high winds.

The Board of Education during its January meeting moved the policy in for first reader but in doing so Vice Chair Caleb Shores said he thought the minimum temperature was too low for children.

Superintendent Dr. John Gaddis said he will poll members before the Feb. 21 meeting to gauge what temperature they feel is best.

Parents may email their school board member with their opinions at William McInturff, District 3,  wmcinturff@somerset.k12.md.us; Caleb Shores, District 2,  cshores@somerset.k12.md.us; Troy Brittingham, Jr., District 4, tbrittingham@somerset.k12.md.us; Allen C. Ford, District 5, acford@somerset.k12.md.us; and Andrew Gleason, District 1, agleason@somerset.k12.md.us.

Policy 600-3 was last amended in August to include updated Maryland nutrition standards.
