Blessings for Badges to deliver holiday meals, seeks donations

LEIPSIC — Blessings for Badges will deliver a homemade hot meal to every first responder working on Thanksgiving Day in Kent and Sussex counties.

The group is seeking donations of food and money to support the effort.

Blessings for Badges was founded in Sussex County in 2018 to provide meals for police officers, paramedics, firefighters, dispatchers, EMTs and correctional officers who can’t enjoy a meal at home with their families.

In Kent County, a group of volunteers will gather at Leipsic Fire Company at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 23, to begin prepping meals and be back again at 6:30 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day. Volunteers will help cook, serve and deliver meals to first responders.

Leading Kent County’s effort are Deb Lawhead and Sandy Robinson, co-chairs of the Kent County Blessings for Badges.

Sussex County meals will be assembled at Millsboro Fire Company and delivered to each first responder’s station.

Harrington Raceway and Casino is providing all the turkeys, Mission BBQ is providing green beans and corn bread and several ladies auxiliaries are pitching in with trays of mashed potatoes, stuffing, and macaroni and cheese. Other groups helping include Main Street Market, Town of Clayton and Crossroad Church.

Thank-you cards, made by Natalie Surles, are included with each meal to remind first responder how appreciated they are.

The group is also accepting financial donations to help offset costs associated with the project. Checks can be made payable to Blessings for Badges and mailed to P.O. Box 1041, Millsboro, DE 19966.
