Salisbury-area runners will have two Thanksgiving Day events in which they can participate.

On the trails of Pemberton Historical Park, the 13th annual Turkey Trek 5K, organized by Wicomico County Recreation & Parks, will begin Thursday, Nov. 25, at 8 a.m.

Check-in begins at 7 a.m., and before the start, Kate James of Driven Physiotherapy will host a group warm-up.

“The Turkey Trek is the best way to start your Thanksgiving morning,” said Recreation Superintendent James Simmons. “Burn those calories and enjoy the scenery of the Pemberton Park trails before a full day of eating.”

There will be awards for the overall male and female winners and for first through third place male and female participants in the following age groups: 14 and under, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49 and 50-plus.

Participants can dress up and try to earn the award for Best Thanksgiving Costume. 

Registration is $35, and race proceeds go toward Pemberton Park Nature Camp and other environmental education programs. Register by Nov. 1 to be guaranteed a long-sleeved event shirt. 

Pemberton Historical Park is located at 5561 Plantation Lane in Salisbury.

Meanwhile, the YMCA of the Chesapeake has announced the return of its annual Turkey Trot, which will be hosted virtually and in-person at eight locations across the Eastern Shore.

“We couldn’t be happier to bring back this Thanksgiving tradition,” said Robbie Gill, YMCA of the Chesapeake CEO. “We are so thankful that our friends and neighbors across the Eastern Shore choose to get active with friends and family at the Turkey Trot while supporting their local Y.”

Proceeds from the Turkey Trot are dedicated to the YMCA’s Annual Fund, which supports programs for all ages across the Shore.

Those participating virtually can walk a 5K route of their choosing whenever it is convenient between Tuesday, Nov. 23, and Saturday, Nov. 27.

Each YMCA in-person Turkey Trot will be a 5K held on Thanksgiving Day. Participants can run or walk as a team, with family (including their dogs) or on their own. All ages and abilities are welcomed and encouraged.

In Salisbury, a YMCA in-person Turkey Trot will be hosted at the Richard A. Henson Family YMCA.
