HARRINGTON — Delaware State Police on Monday identified Maricruz Sanchez, 20, of Milford, as the victim in a roadway shooting March 31.

Ms. Sanchez died Friday from injuries suffered during the incident, DSP spokeswoman Master Cpl. Heather Pepper said. An autopsy by the Division of Forensic Science determined that she was shot multiple times in the upper torso, authorities said.

The sequence unfolded as Ms. Sanchez was driving westbound on Milford-Harrington Highway in the area of Sandbox Road at approximately 3:15 p.m., DSP said. An unknown suspect in a dark-colored SUV pulled alongside her vehicle after crossing a double yellow line and fired a gun multiple times into her car, according to authorities.

DSP said the suspect fled the scene following the weapon’s discharge. Ms. Sanchez’s vehicle left the roadway and came to rest in a field, Cpl. Pepper said.

Ms. Sanchez was transported to a hospital via ambulance in critical condition, DSP said, and Milford-Harrington Highway was closed for approximately four hours while police investigated.

According to a DSP news release, “Although the investigation is in the early stages, it appears Sanchez was targeted in retaliation for an earlier incident in which she was not involved.

“Sanchez, the mother of two young children, was an innocent victim.”

DSP asked anyone with information to contact Detective D. Grassi of the Homicide Unit by calling 365-8441. Information may also be provided by calling Delaware Crime Stoppers at (800) TIP-3333 or by visiting its website.
