DOVER — An unknown Black male was being sought after an attempted rape Monday on the property of the Dover Public Library, Dover police spokesman Sgt. Mark Hoffman said.

Police said a 45-year-old homeless woman was in the area of the library at 35 Loockerman Plaza when she was approached by the suspect at approximately 12:13 a.m. The man struck the victim multiple times, threw her to the ground and began to remove her clothing, Sgt. Hoffman said.

As the woman was screaming for help, two men in the area ran to assist her and confronted the suspect, who then fled on foot, police said.

The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment of her injuries.

Sgt. Hoffman said the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call 302-736-7111. Callers may remain anonymous. Tips may also be submitted through Delaware Crime Stoppers at 800-TIP-3333 or here; a cash reward is possible for information leading to an arrest.
