SOUTH BETHANY — The Stranding Response Team from the Marine Education Research and Rehabilitation Institute rescued a gray seal pup in South Bethany this past weekend.

According to a press release from MERR, the pup — who was dubbed Maxwell — had recently been weaned by his mother and was underweight.

The seal received hydration and nutritional therapy at the MERR response center in Lewes. The Haven Lake Animal Hospital outside Milford donated some additional treatment, as well.

Following therapy, Maxwell was released at a beach along the Delaware Bay in hopes that he will continue to build on the care he received at MERR and thrive on his own.

The seal was one of seven that MERR rescued along coastal waters over a five-day period recently.

If anyone sights a seal, they should contact the MERR Institute hotline immediately at 228-5029.  Remember to keep a distance of 150 feet from any seal or marine life and keep dogs on a leash if a sea animal is encountered.
