DOVER — The number of individuals hospitalized in Delaware with COVID-19 broke the 100-mark for the first time since May 10.
The Delaware Division of Public Health reported 101 COVID-19 hospitalizations in Monday’s update. That is an increase of 25 compared to the day prior and an increase of 64 over the last 10 days.

Hospitalizations were never more than 100 a year ago, with August 2020’s high at 64. Several mitigation measures were in place at this time last year, including a mask mandate, social distancing requirements and an indoor capacity limit of 60%, but vaccines were not available yet.

The number of critically ill patients has remained low during the recent surge. The DPH reported eight of the 101 hospitalizations were considered critical.

New Castle County was responsible for the large one-day rise in hospitalizations with an increase of 23 compared to the day prior. New Castle County, the state’s largest county, leads the state in COVID-19 hospitalizations with 56, followed by 30 in Sussex County and 15 in Kent County.

All hospitalization data is as of Sunday at 6 p.m.

Delaware’s seven-day rolling average for percentage of positive tests is up to 5.1% — above the World Health Organization’s recommended mark of 5%. Kent County has the highest percent-positive rate with a seven-day rolling average of 6.8% while Sussex County is at 6%. New Castle County is the only county under 5% with a mark of 4.2%.

Data regarding percentage of positive tests is as of Friday at 6 p.m. due to a two-day lag to account for the time delay between the date of the test and the date the DPH receives the test result.

For the week of July 31 to Aug. 6, the Greenwood ZIP code had the highest positivity rate with 12.9% of all tests during this time span resulting in positive cases — the only ZIP code in the state above 10%.

The DPH reported 202 positive cases in Monday’s update as Delaware has been above 200 new cases for four days in a row. The state has an all-time total of 112,967 positives.

No new deaths were announced by the DPH as that total remained at 1,835.
