Speak Up: Take-home vehicles on way for Milford officers

Posted

Though there are available funds from a to-be-determined source, Milford police officers won’t be taking their duty vehicles home for at least nine months, maybe more. Police Chief Kenneth Brown’s proposal to purchase 15 Ford Police Interceptor hybrid vehicles for $883,551.27 was unanimously approved by City Council on Nov. 8. The officers assigned to the vehicles will be able to drive them between work and their homes.

  • Sixty grand per pop. Hybrid reduces gas usage, I guess, but what a splurge. The taxpayer was doing much better during the Crown Victoria days. Cops are whipping like the Joneses and clearly getting tons of funding. If only we could invest equally into schools or fire stations or paramedics or hospitals. They have to penny pinch in the private sector, while the police and military are funded like first-world socialism. — Coty Gee
  • Take-home cars should only be allowed for officers who actually live in the city of Milford. This would be an incentive to live in the city you work in and become part of the community. This is an extension of community policing. You get to know the people, and the people get to know you. — Will Garfinkel
  • So how does that really work? Effective working relations do that and not how or where one lives. — Howard Gaines III
  • The bottom-line question is effective policing. Ask MPD for an analysis of their workforce, as to how many live in Milford and how many do not and a trend over the last 10 years. — Will Garfinkel
  • The point is, taxpayers shouldn’t be paying for their commute. — Jake Phil
  • We need to keep our officers. Knowing a community takes time, and if we can’t retain the officers we have, think of the time and money to train each and every one. The pool is getting smaller for these brave men and women. This allows them to respond quickly and in a safer manner than in their personal vehicle. — Ann Martha Snyder Lebengood
  • A good incentive that I agree with. Means a lot to me when I occasionally get to take my work truck home. — William Woods
