“Delaware lawmakers will convene on Jan. 11 to continue debate on urgent legislation for mentally capable, terminally ill adults that would give them the option of medical aid in dying to peacefully end their suffering if it becomes unbearable.”

• Here in California, I have had repeated run-ins with disabled folk (especially those in organizations) who oppose aid-in-dying legislation and state representatives who assume those opponents speak for all people with disabilities. “On Jan. 3, Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer, D-N.Y., made this announcement: ‘We hope our Republican colleagues change course and work with us. But if they do not, the Senate will debate and consider changes to Senate rules on or before Jan. 17, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, to protect the foundation of our democracy: free and fair elections.’”

• When you don’t like the rules, just change them to suit yourself. It might help the Dems to change the filibuster rules for the short term, but it will come back to haunt them down the road. Smart senators know this but are afraid to say it for fear of party reprisal. Except the two smart, fearless Dem senators who are taking a stand. I don’t know one person who wanted to vote in the past who couldn’t. Do you know anybody who wanted to vote but couldn’t? — Jay Pratt
