Speak Up: New footbridge at Killens Pond State Park, Round 2

Posted

Along a country road in Felton, construction crews have been at work since November assembling a nearly quarter-mile-long metal footbridge over Killens Pond State Park’s eponymous body of water. At present, to access the eastern portion of the park’s trails, hikers have to walk on the shoulder of Killens Pond Road, which is a safety hazard. Soon, hikers will have a dedicated walkway — 10 feet wide and 350-plus yards long — that is compliant with the American With Disabilities Act.

  • Cars fly on that road, and there’s not a lot of room to get over. So glad this is happening. — Holly Overmyer
  • The road traffic on Killens Pond Road has always been bad. This should help keep walkers and hikers safe! — Howard Gaines III
  • Best thing they could have done. No one has any respect on this road when you’re passed by a vehicle going well over 60 mph! Thank you for building this awesome footbridge over the water. — Dawn McGinnis Carpenter
  • Yes, yes, yes! — Joy Gordy-Stith Redick
  • Awesome news! — Christy H. Hermogenes
  • I want to know when Sheep Pen Road will be reopened in Millsboro. I believe it was originally stated that the work would be done in February. The road is still closed, and no signs of reopening anytime soon. It is my belief that the private contractors are purposefully prolonging the project at the direction of Plantation Lakes, as punishment for the local surrounding landowners who voted down their request to turn the road into their own private use. This road has been closed since the beginning of fall, and I am sure I’m not alone in being tired of the inconvenience of having to drive the detour anytime I need to go that way. Enough is enough. — Tiffany Burton
  • Well said! It is very inconvenient, and they have it closed like it’s permanent. We need to get it open now! — Maryann Currie
  • Saw it today! It’s truly amazing! — Sharon Lewis
  • Somewhere for us to check out. — Raymond Paul Truax Jr.
  • Great job, Delaware State Parks! What an improvement for all to enjoy and safely access the trails and pond. Can’t wait to use it. — Rob McCleary
  • We need more of these! — John Smith
