Roundup: Delaware State University puts 17 football players on All-MEAC
Delaware State had 17 players named to the All-MEAC football team, including six first-team selections.
DSU’s first team honorees are receiver Trey Gross, offensive lineman Matthew Derks, running back Sy’Veon Wilkerson, defensive lineman Isaiah Williams, defensive back Esaias Guthrie and punter Matt Noll.
Gross was tops in the MEAC in touchdowns (13) and fourth in the league in receptions at 4.3 per game (47 total), while Wilkerson was the No. 2 rusher with 841 yards. Derks was a Preseason All-MEAC Selection and Guthrie was tops in the league with four interceptions.
Noll ranked first among MEAC punters at 40.4 yards per kick.
Delaware State is represented on the All-MEAC second team by center Dillon Marshall, defensive back Charles Peeler and safety Kwannah Kollie.
Hornets earning All-MEAC third-team honors are offensive linemen James King and Brandon Bradford, defensive lineman Marcus Winfield, linebackers Ronald Holmes, Brooks Parker and Kamari Jackson, and defensive backs Jawain Granger and Romell Harris-Freeman.
Delaware State was 5-6 overall and third in the MEAC standings a with a 2-3 league record this past season.
Hens put 13 on All-CAA: The Delaware football squad had 13 players named to the All-Colonial Athletic Association teams on Tuesday.
Three Blue Hens earned first-team selections, while six were placed on the second team and four more received nods to the third team after Delaware’s 5-6 campaign.
Delaware’s players named to the first team were senior offensive lineman David Kroll, sophomore punter Tyler Pastula and safety Kedrick Whitehead (Middletown). Kroll earned the honor for the second straight year, Pastula led the league with a 42.5-yard average and 24 punts inside the opponents’ 20 while Whitehead ranked second on the defense with 76 tackles to go along with eight pass breakups.
The Hens earning second-team All-CAA honors were linebacker Johnny Buchanan, cornerback Nijuel Hill, running back Dejoun Lee, receiver Thyrick Pitts, safety Noah Plack and punt returner Jourdan Townsend.
Making the third team from Delaware were placekicker Ryan Coe, defensive end Artis Hemmingway, defensive end Chase McGowan and linebacker Colby Reeder.
College basketball
Hornets’ Miller honored: Delaware State freshman center Unique Miller was tabbed with Rookie of the Week honors for women’s basketball.
In the Hornets’ two games against Penn State and Delaware, Miller averaged 9.5 points and 8.0 rebounds per game while shooting a combined 8-for-13 (.615) from the floor.
College equestrian
Hornets ranked No. 7 nationally: The Delaware State equestrian team has climbed to No. 7 in the latest National Collegiate Equestrian Association Top 10 Dual Discipline team rankings.
It is the best showing in team history. Delaware State re-entered the national poll last month for the first since the 2019-20 season, ranking 10th in the October vote.
The Hornets wrapped up their fall schedule with impressive showings in wins over Cal Davis and South Dakota State last weekend.
DSU will begin the winter/spring portion of their schedule on Jan. 27 at No. 10 Texas Christian.
College bowling
Two DSU bowlers honored: Delaware State’s Saralyne Nassberg was named MEAC Bowler of the Week after she finished fourth in a field of 95 bowlers at the Eastern Shore Hawks Classic.
She rolled an average of 219.20 in five games including a 241. She recorded the highest finish of all competitors who represented MEAC teams at the event.
DSU freshman Emily Breidegam was named the MEAC Rookie of the Week after she finished 28th overall in the Eastern Shore, the highest of any MEAC freshman in the tournament. Breidegam recorded a final score of 973 (194.60 average) and rolled a team single-game high of 268 in game two.
