Roundup: Cape Henlopen rallies past Smyrna on last-match pin

Cape Henlopen High trailed Smyrna for much of the night in their wrestling showdown on Wednesday night.

But the Vikings were in front when it mattered most.

Carson Kammerer’s third-period pin in the night’s final match gave Cape Henlopen a dramatic, 34-30, comeback victory over the Eagles in the Henlopen North matchup in Lewes.

Kammerer was leading the Eagles’ Shaun Atkinson, 6-1, in the 170-pound bout when he pinned him in 5:17. The Vikings, who were behind 30-28 going into 170, won the final four matches and scored the last 19 points after trailing 30-15.

It was only the second time Cape Henlopen (2-0 North, 4-1 overall) has ever beat Smyrna (1-1 North, 1-1 overall) but the second time in the last four seasons.

The Vikings also got a tech fall from Mike Frederick (152) and major decisions from Andrew Schaen (145) and Charles Fritchman (160) in the match-ending run. Earlier in the match, Cape Henlopen got a pin from Lucas Ruppert (285 pounds).

The Eagles took an early advantage when Derek Davis started the match with a second-period pin at 177. Smyrna also got pins from Warren Coates (106), Gabe Giampietro (120) and Jamar Wells (138) to eventually go up 30-15.

The Vikings won eight of the 14 individual matches.

Indian River 48, Delmar 25: The Indians improved to 5-0 overall with the Henlopen South win.

Kyree Knight (126), James Esque (138), Jayvion Chandler (152), Bryce Rickabaugh (160), Clayton Cifuentes Roblero (195), Austin Grise (220) and T.J. Burke (285) all had pins for IR.

Ryan Goehner (113), Trent Kemp (145) and Kane Johnson (170) won by fall for the Wildcats.

Delmar 52, Sussex Academy 30: Trent Kemp (145), Ryder Keidel (160) and Kane Johnson (170) all posted pins in under a minute as the Wildcats (1-3) earned their first win of the season.

Delmar also got pins from Ryan Goehner (113), Kendric Jones (120), Dustin Elliott (132), Bryce Johnson (182) and Anthony Ennis (220).

Dawson Weems (285) registered a 24-second pin for the Seahawks (2-1). Joshua Jovel-Velasquez (138), Douglas Horton (152) and Gerald Windish (195) also won by fall.

Indian River 60, Sussex Academy 19: The Indians collected 10 pins in the non-conference victory.

Girls’ basketball

St. Georges 47, Lake Forest 38: The Spartans fell to 4-1 with the non-conference loss to the Hawks.

Caesar Rodney 46, Polytech 25: Teri Bell netted 19 points in the Riders’ Henlopen North win on Tuesday night.

CR (5-3), which won for the third time in its last four games, was leading by only three before out-scoring the Panthers, 17-5, in the second quarter. Aaliyah Smith added 10 points.

Sussex Central 48, Milford 10: McKenna Boyle tallied 15 points, with three three-pointers, in the Golden Knights’ North victory on Tuesday.

Also for Central, which led 29-2 at halftime, Takyla Davis scored 10.

Tennis

Injury stops Brengle: Madison Brengle was forced to retire from her quarterfinal match in the Adelaide International 2 Tournament on Wednesday night due to a right calf injury.

Brengle was up a break, 3-2, in the first set against fellow American Alison Riske before taking a medical timeout to receive treatment. Brengle did come back to play her service game but was noticeably limping throughout.

Riske was able to break Brengle back to get the set to 3-3 before the Dover native retired.

Brengle was playing in her first quarterfinal of a full WTA level event since May of 2019 in Nuremberg, Germany. It was also her first hard court quarterfinal since January of 2017 in Auckland, New Zealand.

The Adelaide tournament is the final event before next week’s Australian Open. It is not yet known how Brengle’s injury will affect her ability to participate in the Grand Slam event which begins Sunday night.

Brengle entered Wednesday’s contest having won 18 of her last 21 matches dating back to mid-October across the WTA level and ITF tour. She defeated Russian Anastasia Potapova 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 on Monday night before knocking off Rebecca Peterson of Sweden in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 on Tuesday to reach the quarterfinals in Adelaide.

Brengle was trying to make only the second full WTA level final of her career and the first since January 2015 in Hobart, Australia where she fell to Heather Watson. If she was able to defeat Risk on Wednesday it would have been her first WTA semifinal since the 2016 Rosmalen Grass Court Championships in the Netherlands.

Brengle has won two WTA titles in her career, one in 2020 and another in 2021, but those were WTA 125K events. She also had an additional 16 career titles on the ITF circuit.

College basketball

MEN, Norfolk State 80, Delaware State 51: The Hornets were outscored by 22 points in the second half as they dropped their MEAC opener to the defending conference champions.

Delaware State (2-11) was playing its first game since Dec. 22 as the MEAC dealt with COVID issues.

Myles Carter and Jon Stansbury netted 11 points apiece for the Hornets, who trailed 27-20 at intermission. DSU never led in the contest.

The Hornets played without starting guards Dominik Fragala and Corey Perkins in the contest.
