Police pursuit from Dover to Maryland ends with DUI charge

DOVER — A police pursuit that began in Dover late Sunday concluded in Maryland, west of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, and resulted in the arrest of a 41-year-old Dover man on multiple charges, authorities said.

Trovarus Eley was sought following an investigation regarding a protection-from-abuse order and a burglary, Dover police spokesman Sgt. Mark Hoffman said. He was seen leaving a residence in the 500 block of Ann Moore Street in a vehicle, and a chase ensued after Mr. Eley continued to drive after officers attempted to stop him, Sgt. Hoffman added.

As the pursuit moved through the Dover area, police said, an officer deployed stop sticks in the area of Bertrand Drive and Forrest Avenue, and they damaged several tires on the vehicle Mr. Eley was driving, police said.

Mr. Eley continued to travel westbound on Forrest Avenue and eventually reached U.S. 301 in Maryland. The chase covered approximately 26 miles before officers discontinued it due to safety concerns as they approached the Bay Bridge and the tires on Mr. Eley’s vehicle continued to deteriorate, Sgt. Hoffman said.

Eventually, the vehicle became disabled after crossing the bridge (a nearly 4.5-mile span), police said. Mr. Eley was taken into custody without incident by Maryland State Police and the Maryland Transit Administration in the area of Exit 32, near Sandy Point State Park.

Maryland officials charged Mr. Eley with DUI, and he was held in custody pending extradition to Delaware, Sgt. Hoffman said.

Mr. Eley was facing charges in Delaware that included second-degree burglary, violation of a protection-from-abuse order, DUI, disregarding a police officer’s signal and several traffic violations, Dover police said.

Delaware State Police had an active warrant for Mr. Eley on charges of theft under $1,500, offensive touching and breach of release in a separate case, DSP spokeswoman Master Cpl. Heather Pepper said Monday.

The sequence began at 10:32 p.m., when officers were called to the Ann Moore Street residence by a female reporting that Mr. Eley was inside the home despite a PFA against him. Arriving officers found no signs of forced entry and left, police said.

Officers stayed in the vicinity, and Mr. Eley was seen driving from the home a short time later, police said.
