CAMDEN-WYOMING — A 74-year-old Camden-Wyoming man was fatally struck by a vehicle while mowing the ditch in front of his home Saturday night, Delaware State Police spokesman Master Cpl. Gary Fournier said.

The incident occurred at approximately 7:53 p.m. in the 4000 block of Westville Road, authorities said. According to police, a vehicle exited the roadway for unknown reasons, entered the grassy shoulder and swale before crossing the victim’s private driveway. The victim was struck while standing/walking behind his push lawnmower, Cpl. Fournier said.

The victim was transported by EMS to Bayhealth Hospital, Kent Campus, where he was pronounced dead. His name was withheld pending notification of next of kin, police said.

Police said the driver was wearing a seatbelt and was treated on scene by EMS for minor inquires and released. No charges were filed at the time, police said Sunday.

Westville Road, between Tower Road and Sandy Bend Road, was closed for approximately 3.5 hours while the collision was investigated and cleared.

The crash remains under investigation by the Troop 3 Collision Reconstruction Unit. Police asked anyone with information to contact Sgt. J. Wheatley by calling 698-8518. Information may also be provided by calling Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333 or online delaware.crimestoppersweb.com.
