Local roundup: Sussex Central tops Hodgson 35-6

Sussex Central High bounced back from its first loss of the season to down Hodgson, 35-6, in non-conference football on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights are 2-1 after avenging a loss to the Silver Eagles (1-2) in the 2019 DIAA Division I state tournament.

Central has an open date next weekend before hosting Henlopen North rival Smyrna on Oct. 1.

Laurel 63, Early College 6: Nine different players scored touchdowns for the Bulldogs (3-0), who remained unbeaten with the Class 1A win on Friday night.

Laurel led 42-0 in the contest, which was the first varsity game for the Hornets.

Freshman Josiah Price scored the first touchdown in Early College history on a 70-yard run in the fourth quarter.

William Penn 52, Cape Henlopen 38: The Vikings held a 38-22 third-quarter lead before the Colonials rallied for the final 30 points of the contest as Cape Henlopen dropped to 0-3.

Chancler Johnson had touchdown runs of 54 and 67 yards for the Vikings. Maurki James returned the opening kickoff 80 yards for another Cape TD while Daniel Saez and Thomas Messick both added scoring runs.

Hank D’Ambrogi kicked a 24-yard field goal.

Delmar 21, Red Lion Christian 14: The Wildcats bounced back from a season-opening loss to improve to 1-1 with a Class 2A win.

Indian River 31, Odessa 0: The Indians evened their record at 1-1 with the shutout victory on Friday night.

Boys’ soccer

Brandywine 1, Smyrna 0: The Bulldogs scored in the 18th minute and then made the lead stand up.

Brandywine finished with advantages of 12-3 in shots and 14-1 in corner kicks.

Field hockey

Lake Forest 4, Caravel 1: Roxanne Troutman tallied three goals to pace the Spartans to the victory on Friday.

Lacey Hudson also scored for Lake Forest, which led 2-0 going into the fourth quarter.
