Smyrna High placed second while Cape Henlopen took third at the boys’ DIAA indoor track & field state championship meet on Wednesday.

Salesianum won the team title with 117.5 points, followed by the Eagles (86) and Vikings (72.5). The Sals were just the fourth boys’ team champion to reach 100 points in the meet since Delcastle put up a record 144 in 1990.

The Sals’ score was the third-highest total since the event began in 1982.

The meet was held outside at Dover High because no indoor venues in the region were available due to COVID-19 restrictions.

In the girls’ meet, Padua ran away from the 18-team field, winning the team title with 178.5 points. The Pandas won 10 of the 15 individual events.

Ursuline was second with 82.5 while Smyrna placed third with 61.

A number of individual athletes from the Henlopen Conference won state championship in both meets.

Smyrna’s Demetri Carter won both 55 (6.66) and the 200 meters (22.48). Teammate Liam Meginniss won the 800 (2:00.76) with both of them running a leg on the Eagles’ winning 1,600-meter relay team.

Downstate competitors dominated the field events, with athletes from five different schools taking titles. Cape Henlopen’s Josiah Miller won the shot put (46-10.00); Dover’s Mishandray Etienne won the high jump (5-11.00); Sussex Central’s Asher Timmons won the pole vault (11-03.00); Milford’s Emanuele Carranza won the long jump (21-01.75); and Smyrna’s Lawrence Tyrell won the triple jump (43-01.25).

Henlopen Conference runners also won two of three boys’ relays. Smyrna’s Carter, Daymien Mickle, Meginniss, and Brett won the 1,600-meter relay (3:31.51) while Polytech’s Ty Sabanayagam, Tyler Blandin, Jack Fisher and Matt Gatune took the 3,200 relay (8:20.31).

In the girls’ meet, Polytech senior Casey Talamini-Kelemen was the only winner from the Henlopen Conference. She took both the long jump (16-05.00) and the triple jump (36-05.25).

DSU women cancel rest of season: The Delaware State women’s basketball season has come to an abrupt end due to coronavirus health and safety protocols.

The decision was made shortly before the Hornets were to take on MEAC rival Morgan State in Baltimore on Wednesday evening. Thursday’s scheduled game between the teams, in addition to Delaware State’s MEAC Tournament play-in contest against Coppin State slated for Sunday have also been canceled.

“It’s understandable that the team is quite emotional about the season ending this way, but I shared with the ladies that their health and well-being are first and foremost in all decisions,” said Dave Caputo, DSU’s third year coach.

Caputo added, “This has been a very challenging season dealing with the pandemic, testing, injuries, postponements and other factors, however, the team was excited about the chance to finish the regular season on a high note and play their way into the main MEAC Tournament field. I’m extremely proud and thankful to the ladies for their effort and commitment to the university and the program through it all.”

The Hornets had 10 seniors this season and will welcome at least 10 newcomers for the 2021-22 campaign.
