St. Georges scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning and then held off Polytech High to post a 3-2 victory over the Panthers in non-conference baseball on Wednesday afternoon.

Winning pitcher Zach Hart pitched a complete-game four-hitter for the Hawks while striking out seven in the 80-pitch effort. Shawn Edevane doubled home two runs in the third before Joe McDermott brought him home with a double.

Connor Bartlett pitched three scoreless innings in relief for Polytech and also drove in both Panthers’ two runs in the sixth.

Boys’ lacrosse

Lake Forest 9, Delmar 7: Aidan Dunn, Matthew Triola (1 assist) and Chaz Hughes (1 assist) all scored twice in the Spartans’ Henlopen South victory.

Lake Forest also got goals from Brandon Tice, Jason Rea and Cael Moyer with Caleb Secrist making 11 saves.

College lacrosse

WOMEN, Neumann 17, Wesley 12: After netting 10 first-half goals, the Wolverines limited to just two in the second half as the Knights rallied for the Atlantic East Conference win.

Wesley (0-4 AEC, 1-4 overall) led 10-8 at halftime.

Catherine Bennett tallied six goals for the Wolverines while Hanna Giaccone and Kassie Dieter both scored twice. Katelyn Porter (Smyrna) made 13 saves as Neumann out-shot Wesley, 42-39.

The Wolverines have two games remaining before the program shuts down.

College athletics

DSU has two honored by MEAC: Delaware State University Senior Associate Director of Athletics Alecia Shields-Gadson, along with former DSU sports information director Maxine Lewis are among 27 individuals honored by the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference as Pioneers.

The individuals and team honored this year were trailblazers and groundbreakers who were nominated by administrators and staffs of MEAC member institutions, MEAC office staff members and members of the MEAC 50th Anniversary Committee and voted on by the conference’s Senior Woman Administrators.

Among the honorees are women’s sports coaches, athletics administrators, student-athletes, one team, one game official and a current NASCAR crew member.

Delaware State announced the appointment of Shields-Gadson, Senior Associate Director of Athletics for Compliance and Senior Woman Administrator, for the newly-created position of Deputy Athletics Director in Sept. 2020.

The appointment assigns Shields-Gadson additional responsibilities as the department’s Diversity and Inclusion Designee, fulfilling a new NCAA requirement that went into effect in Aug. 2020.

Shields-Gadson has more than 25 years of experience in intercollegiate athletics as a senior level administrator and head coach. Prior to joining the Delaware State staff in 2016, she was an athletics administrator at Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference rival Coppin State, in addition to Alcorn State of the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

Lewis became the MEAC’s first female sports information director when she was hired to the post in 1978. She went on to hold that position for 11 years and then went on to represent DSU and the MEAC on a national scale when she was hired as Senior Sports Publicist for ABC Sports in New York City. She worked for ABC Sports for 16 years, from 1981 to 2005.
