Local college notebook: Ex-Senator Harris shines at Widener

Posted

Triston Harris has found a football home for his final college season.

The former Dover High standout quarterback is playing this fall as a grad student at NCAA Division III Widener University.
The 6-foot-1, 220-pounder spent the rest of his career at FCS Division I Towson. He played in only a pair of games for the Tigers, while missing one season with a knee injury.

At Widener (3-0), Harris has already played in three games, with a pair of starts. He’s completed 44-of-72 passes for 542 yards with four touchdowns and four interceptions.

Harris has also run for 115 yards before figuring in sacks.

In Widener’s season-opening 27-22 win over Rowan, Harris completed 17-of-29 passes for 243 yards and a TD while also netting 49 yards on the ground.

Hornets back home

Delaware State is happy to be back home after a tough road loss a week ago.

The Hornets (1-2) host Merrimack (2-1) on Saturday at 2 p.m. for Family Day.

Last Saturday, the Hornets went to East Tennessee State and came home with a 38-6 loss to the No. 16 FCS Buccaneers.

After traveling to Tennessee on the day of the game, it probably didn’t help DSU when the start of the contest was delayed for 30 minutes because of severe weather.

The Hornets are in the middle of a stretch where they play five of their seven games at home.

Brown sparks WVA

Former Smyrna High running back Leddie Brown had a big game for West Virginia in the Mountaineers’ 27-21 win over Virginia Tech on Saturday.

Brown ran for 161 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries for West Virginia. The senior opened the game by going 80 yards for a TD on the first play from scrimmage.

“The only thing I’m thinking of in that moment is, ‘Get to the end zone,’” said Brown. “I just believed in myself and my offensive line. My offensive line did a phenomenal job.”

For the season, Brown has run for a team-leading 265 yards and five TDs. He also has nine catches for 92 yards and another touchdown.
