DOVER — The Dover Police Department Police Chief’s Advisory Committee and Dover Police Athletic League will hold the Uniting Neighbors Initiative Through Youth (U.N.I.T.Y.) video contest to engage young residents in crime-prevention messaging.

The Police Chief’s Advisory Committee and P.A.L. developed the idea with the goal of engaging youth in a digital fashion due to the impact COVID-19 has had on the department’s ability to conduct youth outreach programs and promote crime prevention, according to a news release.

The contest will be split into two grade groups: middle school (fifth-eighth grades) and high school (ninth-12th grades).

Prizes will be awarded to finalists in each age group from donations from Excel Business Systems, Westside Carwash, the Psi Iota chapter of Omega Psi Phi and Joreen Sykes, a member of the Police Chief’s Advisory Committee.

A minimum of $1,500 in total prize money/scholarships will be divided among the winning video creators.

More information and contest registration is available on the Dover Police Department website.

The contest rules are:

• The video must contain one or a combination of the following messages: anti-gang, anti-gun/violence or anti-drug.

• Videos cannot depict violence, drugs or illegal activity in any form, including replicas of weapons, drugs, etc.

• Videos must be 30-120 seconds long.

• No profanity or bleeped profanity, inappropriate language, racial slurs or discrimination.

• Videos must be made with original content.

• Participating students must reside in the Caesar Rodney or Capital school districts. Attendance at those schools is not necessary (private school, charter school, home school or countywide school attendees are eligible).

• Prizes awarded to entries involving multiple participants will be divided equally among the winning team members.

• Deadline for submissions is 3 p.m. April 16.

Submissions will be judged on a majority vote based on strength of message, originality, visual appeal, following of guidelines and creativity.
