DOVER — A 22-year-old Dover man is facing a first-degree murder charge in an April 12 shooting case, authorities said.

On Monday, Riley Braswell was arrested without incident in Brooklyn, New York, in connection with the death of 19-year-old Dazhmier Brooks, Dover police said. He also faces charges of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a person prohibited (two counts) and tampering with evidence.

Mr. Braswell, who police said was in possession of a 9 mm gun when he was found, was being held in New York pending extradition to Delaware.

After receiving calls for a shooting at approximately 9:16 p.m. April 12, police responded to the 400 block of Sussex Avenue and found Mr. Brooks unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the chest. Officers rendered aid until medical personnel arrived, and Mr. Brooks was transported to Bayhealth Hospital, Kent Campus, Dover police spokesman Sgt. Mark Hoffman said. He later died from his injury.

The U.S. Marshals Service’s First State Fugitive Task Force made the apprehension, with assistance from the Marshals’ Eastern District of New York unit, authorities said.

The incident was the first homicide of the year in Dover, Sgt. Hoffman said.
