Delmarva Power employees awarded for volunteer work

NEWARK — Three local Delmarva Power employees have been recognized with the company’s highest achievement for volunteerism and community involvement. Antonios Boulos, Anne Gwal and Donna Knight have received the Powering Communities Employee Volunteer Award for their incredible volunteer work during 2020 and the challenges presented by the pandemic. As part of the recognition, Delmarva Power’s parent company, Exelon, announced a combined $20,000 in charitable contributions to the local nonprofits that the award winners support.

“Our employee volunteers represent the best of our company values and it is an honor to recognize their passion for giving back and to celebrate their outstanding contributions,” said Mellanie Kai Lassiter, senior manager of Corporate Relations for Pepco Holdings, which includes Delmarva Power.” We recognize that our shared commitment to corporate responsibility and the actions of many can have a powerful impact in the community that is strengthened through support for the amazing organizations that our employees are most passionate about.”

This year’s Powering Communities Employee Volunteer Award winners were selected for their contributions to the Fame Fire Company No. 3 of West Chester, City Fare’s Meals on Wheels program, and the South Asian Bar Association.

• Antonios Boulos, principal engineer, received the Exelon Powering Communities Achievement Award, which provides a $10,000 grant, for his work with the Fame Fire Company No. 3 of West Chester. Boulos has been a volunteer firefighter for 21 years. In 2020, Boulos responded to over half of the nearly 500 emergency calls and was named the company’s Firefighter of the Year.

• Anne Gwal, assistant general counsel, received the Exelon Powering Communities Merit Award, which provides a $5,000 grant, for her work with the South Asian Bar Association (SABA). Gwal has volunteered with SABA since 2006, currently as a trustee and formerly as president of SABA North America. The SABA Foundation raises funds that directly benefit marginalized members of the Asian and South Asian communities, LGBTQ South Asians, undocumented immigrants and families from varied socio-economic backgrounds. Focusing on domestic violence, immigration rights, community access to justice, and hate crimes and discrimination, the foundation contributes to organizations that help thousands of individuals obtain safe shelter, food, housing, employment and immigration/legal assistance.

• Donna Knight, administrative coordinator, received the Exelon Powering Communities Merit Award, which provides a $5,000 grant, for her work with City Fare’s Meals on Wheels program. For more than 20 years Knight has volunteered with City Fare’s Meals on Wheels program through St. Anthony’s Community Center. Realizing that a short, friendly visit can make all the difference to a homebound senior – and that it might be the only daily contact that senior has with another person, she manages Delmarva Power’s volunteer route schedule, which delivers about 2,000 meals per year and requires 40 volunteers. Delmarva Power employees have been volunteering to deliver meals to homebound seniors five days a week for the past 30 years.

For the 16th year, 24 employees across the Exelon family of companies were recognized for their efforts and their nonprofit partners each received grants from the company, totaling $200,000. An external selection committee, comprised of leaders from the nonprofit community, selected these dedicated individuals for their volunteer efforts. Since its inception, the Powering Communities Employee Volunteer Awards program has recognized more than 260 employees and provided more than $1.7 million to nonprofit partners.
The Powering Communities program aligns with the company’s purpose of powering a cleaner and brighter future for its customers and communities. Through the program, hundreds of Delmarva Power employees volunteer thousands of hours annually to support initiatives they are passionate about and make the communities in which they reside better places to live and work.
