Delaware's COVID percent-positive rate keeps rising

DOVER — Delaware’s COVID-19 percent-positive rate increased for the fourth consecutive week.

The state’s seven-day rolling average for percentage of positive tests is at 2.5%, according to data via the Delaware Division of Public Health. This is up from 1.8% a week prior.

The most recent mark of 2.5% is as of Tuesday at 6 p.m. due to a two-day lag to account for the time delay between the date of the test and the day the DPH receives the test result. Delaware is still below the World Health Organization’s recommended seven-day rolling average of 5%.

One new COVID-19-related death was reported this week — a 78-year-old Sussex County resident. This individual was not fully vaccinated, according to the DPH. It was the 1,698th COVID-19-related death in the state.

The number of individuals hospitalized with the virus is at 36 as of Thursday at 6 p.m. Four cases are considered critical, the DPH said.

Delaware averaged 49.9 new positive COVID-19 cases per day over the last week. The state has recorded an all-time total of 110,638 positive cases.

The DPH said no new cases of the delta variant were found in the past week during routine surveillance of test specimen. Forty-six cases were sequenced during the week. There have been 31 cases of the delta variant identified in Delaware but the actual number could be higher since not every positive test is sequenced for variants.

According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 71.5% of adult Delawareans have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. There have been 1,044,737 doses of the vaccine administered in Delaware.

The DPH will be administering doses at the Delaware State Fair in Harrington this coming week. Vaccinations will be done from 2 to 8 p.m. in the Delaware Building across from the M&T Grandstands. Both the Pfizer vaccine (for those 12 years old and up) and the one-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine will be available.
