SMYRNA — A 51-year-old Clayton woman died from injuries sustained in a Monday morning vehicle crash in the area of U.S. 13 and South Carter Road, Delaware State Police spokeswoman Master Cpl. Heather Pepper said.

The woman was driving a 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan that was struck by a 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe that failed to stop at a red light at an intersection for unknown reasons, authorities said. After impact, the Grand Caravan overturned onto its passenger side just east of the collision scene, police said.

The driver of the Grand Caravan was extricated from the vehicle by fire department personnel and transported to an area hospital, where she died a short time later. Identification is pending notification to next of kin.

The driver of the Santa Fe, a 28-year-old Hartly woman, was transported to an area hospital, where she was treated and released.

The collision remains under investigation by the DSP Troop 3 Collision Reconstruction Unit. Police ask any witnesses to contact Cpl. Joseph Lane by calling 302-698-8457. Information may also be provided by calling Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333 or online at delaware.crimestoppersweb.com.
