Brandywine Valley SPCA organizes pet rescue after Hurricane Ida

Posted

GEORGETOWN — The Brandywine Valley SPCA has orchestrated the first rescue airlift of shelter animals from Louisiana following Hurricane Ida’s landfall.

A Wings of Rescue flight funded by Petco Love will airlift nearly 200 animals from the Hammond, Louisiana, airport to Georgetown, as well as Cincinnati, Ohio.
Combined with Saturday’s pre-storm flight of 110 dogs and cats, the BVSPCA has coordinated the rescue of more than 300 shelter animals from Louisiana related to Hurricane Ida.

The flight will carry dogs, cats and rabbits that were adoptable in shelters prior to the storm. They come from seven different shelters and rescues, including the Tangipahoa Parish Animal Shelter, where the BVSPCA has had staff working on-site since January.

The unowned pets are being relocated from shelters without power, many of which also sustained storm damage. Relocating these homeless pets allows the sending shelters to focus on recovering and being a resource for local family pets displaced during the storm.

In addition to the dogs and cats coming to the BVSPCA, the organization has arranged for partner shelter SPCA Cincinnati to take some of the dogs and cats, as well as the rabbits.

The dogs and cats coming to the BVSPCA will go to the organization’s Animal Rescue Center in Georgetown. They will start becoming available for adoption on Thursday.

The flight is scheduled to arrive Wednesday at Delaware Coastal Airport in Georgetown.

This is the second Ida-related airlift for the Brandywine Valley SPCA. The first rescue flight on Aug. 28 moved 110 cats and dogs out of Louisiana shelters in advance of the storm to get them to safety and to allow the local shelters to prepare for post-storm needs in their community. The flight was operated by Wings of Rescue and funded by Petco Love and the ASPCA.

“We’re relieved that our staff working in Louisiana and our friends at area shelters are safe,” said Adam Lamb, BVSPCA CEO. “We busied ourselves during the storm by lining up the resources for the post-storm help we knew would be needed. We’re grateful for the strong relationships we have with Petco Love and Wings of Rescue to be able to step up in this time of need.”

The BVSPCA is waiving adoption fees for all animals at all of its locations through Sunday, Sept. 5. More details on adopting, fostering and donating are available at www.bvspca.org/hurricane-ida.
