DOVER — Twenty-four artists from Delaware, Pennsylvania and Maryland painted 54 paintings on Loockerman Street and nearby downtown areas during the third annual Paint Dover! plein-air event, competition and exhibition Sept. 29-Oct. 1.

The Indian summer weather was warm, and the sun cast beautiful shadows over the project’s three days. In addition, the Fig Tree Band provided a jazz-fusion instrumental backdrop to the event during October’s First Friday.

This year, the event began Sept. 29, as master artist Ray Ewing provided a two-hour oil-painting demonstration to 12 participants.

An extended Paint Dover! exhibition is going on now, both in downtown shops through Wednesday and virtually, with an option to select a favorite painting for a final People’s Choice Award.

The four-minute virtual exhibit features all the paintings created over the three days, with links to vote. The online video, best viewed on a computer rather than a phone, is found here.

A variety of awards, valued at $1,150, were presented to artists on First Friday, including four of the 10 prizes to newcomer artist Katie Yost.

“I was blown away by all the talent of artists. I was shocked and really honored to have won. I have been painting all my life, but an outdoor event like this was new to me,” Ms. Yost said. She is a medical illustrator for Harvard Medical School.

Mr. Ewing was this year’s professional judge. He selected four paintings for awards, including:

• Best in Show — Jim Rehak for “Dappled Light.” “The painting told a story, and the story was real clear, a painting with a strong focal point, clean color and deliberate brushstrokes,” Mr. Ewing said.

• Second Place — William Schulze for “Autumn Shade.”

• Honorable Mention No. 1 — Stacy Rogers for “Dover Vista,” an image from The Green toward Legislative Mall.

• Honorable Mention No. 2 — Siobhan Duggan for “Standstill,” a vibrant night scene of the intersection of Loockerman and State streets, done in pastels.

Additional awards:

• Dover Mayor Robin Christiansen chose “Loockerman by Night” by Ms. Yost as his favorite painting.

• Dover City Councilman Gerald Rocha chose “The Green” by Ms. Yost in the “Dover Heritage” category.

• Dover City Councilman Ralph Taylor, who always wishes to have more than one vote, selected “Loockerman by Night” for the “THIS is Dover” category (the image that best represents the “authenticity and diversity of Dover”).

• Councilman Fred Neil awarded Taylor Collins’ “Dover Roots” for the “Iconic Loockerman” category (the painting that best expressed commercial activity in downtown Dover).

Downtown Dover Partnership “Small Works” awards (up to 200 square inches) were selected by Codi Canasa, owner of AGAPE Body Piercing and a DDP board member. They went to Mr. Schulze for “The Sunlit Green” and to Ms. Yost for “Loockerman by Night.”

Awards were cash and gift certificates provided by sponsors, including the three councilmen and Mayor Christiansen, Jerry’s Artarama of Dover and Blick Art Materials. The Delaware Division of the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts and DDP also provided funding to support the event.
