Cape Henlopen High wrestler Carson Kammerer was voted this week’s State News Athlete of the Week. He registered a third-period pin in the final individual bout of the night to give the Vikings a 34-30 Henlopen North victory over Smyrna.

The senior 170-pounder then finished second in the Grapple at the Tournament (Springbrook, Md.) as Cape won the team title. Kammerer won by pin in both the quarterfinals and semifinals and now has a career record of 78-37 with 21 pins.

Also a lacrosse player, Kammerer plans to continue his wrestling career at Roanoke College.

“Carson has a come a long way since his freshman year,” said Cape Henlopen coach Chris Mattioni. “He is a hard worker who never misses practice. He has a strong desire to excel in wrestling. He asks questions and wants to get better. He is coachable and will do anything to help the team succeed. He welcomed the pressure of the Smyrna match ending at 170.”
