Weston Young, Wicomico County’s former Deputy Chief of Administration and Public Works Director, has been named the incoming Chief Administrative Officer for Worcester County.

The Worcester Commissioners made the announcement Friday afternoon. Young will formally succeed the retiring Harold Higgins in September.

Young departed the Wicomico County government in 2020 and was named Higgins’ deputy.

He had been considered a possible successor to Wayne Strausburg, Wicomico’s then-Administration Director who was planning to retire, but County Executive Bob Culver named John Psota to the post.

Culver died last summer and Psota was eventually named Acting County Executive.

A Pocomoke City native, Young has a reputation as a focused and disciplined administrator and is not of the political mold.

“With several lifelong county leaders retiring, Weston has shouldered new responsibilities and challenges, proving himself to be a wealth of institutional knowledge, a relationship builder, and a key asset to the Commissioners,” Commissions President Joe Mitrecic said.

“He is a highly knowledgeable and motivated individual who is building a high-performance team to lead county initiatives.” Mitrecic said.

Young is a 14-year veteran of local government. He will head Worcester’s leadership team and administer the business of the County Commissioners, including the county budget, financial controls, personnel matters, special projects and oversee department heads.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to serve in this leadership capacity for my home county,” Young said. “Every corner of this county, from farm to coast, has so much to offer its citizens and visitors. I'm optimistic about our future and the work ahead of me."

Young began his career in the private sector and moved on to public sector employment in 2007. In addition to his Wicomico service, he has held roles in Public Works with the city of Salisbury and Hampton, Va.

He holds a bachelor’s in Civil Engineering from the University of Maryland and professional engineering certifications in both Maryland and Virginia.  

He and his wife, Anne, are the parents of toddler-age twins.
