CAMBRIDGE — As the 2020-21 school year gets underway, new Cambridge-South Dorchester High School Bands Director Ray Washington has big plans for his Marching Vikings — not later, but right away.

“I want these kids to have the band experience now,” he said on Thursday.

Mr. Washington has moved from Maple Elementary School, where he led the Marching Lions to gigs including performances at NFL football games and on live, national television broadcasts. As a graduate of C-SD himself, and an alumnus of Morgan State University, in whose bands he also played, Mr. Washington has big plans for his new crew.

A top-notch marching band isn’t cheap, however. With new uniforms probably totaling $50,000, drums at least $20,000 and other gear as well, it will take community support to make it happen.

The backing has been there in the past. When the Lions needed thousands of dollars for a trip to play at a New York Jets game, friends and family came through.
Now, some of those former elementary school students are freshmen at C-SD, and have signed on to the high school’s band.

“The kids are so talented,” Mr. Washington said, adding that some of them play more than one instrument, and do it well. He said there are also four instructors for the color guard who have already promised their assistance with that aspect of the performance.

Also on the wish list, at least for future seasons, is a dance squad. But the band needs to get properly set up first, something for which Mr. Washington’s enthusiasm is clear.
“I’m just excited,” he said.

Donations for the band can be brought or mailed to Cambridge-South Dorchester High School, 2475 Cambridge Beltway, Cambridge MD, 21613-3680. Call 410-228-9224.
