Track and field: Vikings earn wins at Maryland state championship

CAMBRIDGE – Those Vikings sure are fast.

Cambridge-South Dorchester High School’s Enazajah Young placed first in the 55-meter dash in the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association's Region 1A state championship this evening in Landover. She finished in a time of 7.37 seconds.

Overall, the girls' team finished 7th of 23 teams, with 23 points. Smithsburg won the team championship with 94.5 points, while Eastern Shore rivals Snow Hill were sixth, with 32.

As for the boys, the Vikings made a very strong showing, ending up 2nd of 24, with 51 points. Catoctin won, with 79.

The Vikes' 4x400 relay squad wrapped the event with a first-place finish in the final race, with a time of 3:35.72. So that gives Nkole Ballin, the Drummond brothers Tekai and Teshar, and Tori Willis some golden hardware of their own. Many more athletes from C-SD finished second through eighth, earning medals and ribbons of their own.

“Several years ago, starting an indoor track team seemed unrealistic. After all, how many students would really be interested in running indoors, in the wintertime, and there was no way our school could build an indoor facility like other schools,” a statement from the school said. “How could we even compete? Well, years later, after many people fundraised, promoted the idea, guess what our Viking indoor track team did yesterday? Five runners brought back gold medals from the Western Shore; and received a police escort with lights and sirens as they came back through the city of Cambridge to their home school, C-SD!”

The boys’ team had won the 1A East Regional Championship the previous week, at which many of the athletes qualified for the state event.

The following day, the celebration continued, as the winning athletes were congratulated by teachers, administrators and their fellow students. “What a great accomplishment and festive day at school,” the school’s announcement said.
