Allegheny Trio to perform Sept. 29

The Allegheny Trio performs its fall concert “Spice of Life” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 29, at Asbury United Methodist Church.

The trio is joined by guest soprano Jennifer Hope Wills and Salisbury University student showcase performers Christopher Sajadi and Geneque Garrison.

The program features works by a rich mélange of composers from 19th century to the present including the Piano Trio in d minor by Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, Élégie by Jules Massenet and Light in the Piazza by Adam Guettel.

Comprised of cellist Jeffrey Schoyen, violinist Sachiho Murasugi and pianist Ernest Barretta, the trio is named for the Allegheny River, which flows through the Pittsburgh area where the musicians originally played together. They reunited as a trio upon moving to the Eastern Shore.

Conductor and music director of the Salisbury Symphony Orchestra and the Salisbury Youth Orchestra, Schoyen teaches cello and bass at SU.

Murasugi has performed extensively as a professional orchestral and chamber musician. She has been concertmaster of the Filarmonica del Bajio in Mexico, and a member of the West Virginia Symphony, Louisiana Philharmonic and Springfield Symphony.

A successful soloist and chamber musician, Barretta has performed extensively throughout the U.S. and Canada. A member of the piano faculty at Juilliard School of Music, he has appeared at the Seoul Music Festival and Academy in South Korea.

Pork chop drive-thru dinner is this Friday

The public is invited to a Drive Thru Grilled Pork Chop Dinner on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Delmar VFW Post on West State Street. 

Dinner includes a large savory charcoal grilled pork chop that has marinated for 24 hours, homemade succotash, and a large seasoned baked potato. The cost is $13.

Proceeds benefit the many local charities and organizations supported by the Delmar VFW.

Dogfish Head event scheduled Sept. 16

Dogfish Head ushers in the fall with its first-ever Harvest Festival, slated for Thursday, Sept. 16, from 1 to 7 p.m. at the brewery’s Tasting Room & Kitchen in Milton.

Starting in the parking lot, folks will be greeted by a pop-up record shop deemed “Paved Paradise.” Hosted by the Secretly Group, the expo brings the classic record store experience outdoors, with bins packed full of LPs, hundreds of 45s, cassettes and CDs, limited merchandise and DJs spinning all afternoon.

At 6 p.m., the needle drops on a LIVE Q&A session with Dogfish Head Founder & Brewer, Sam Calagione, Numero Group Founder, Ken Shipley, and Paved Paradise Organizer, Amanda Colbenson. While fielding questions from those in attendance, the trio will chat about beer, music and everything in between. 

The fun continues inside the Tasting Room with a special edition of Dogfish Head’s iconic Vintage & Vinyl event. DJ Right On Radio will dig deep into his vinyl stash to find the perfect lyrical pairings for some delicious, vintage pours.

Throughout the day, the Tasting Room will also be pouring Dogfish Head’s fall-favorite Punkin Ale, a brown ale brewed with real pumpkin, brown sugar and spices, and serving a special beer cocktail made with a mix of lemon juice, a house-made orange maple pumpkin syrup and Dogfish Head Distilling Co.’s Straight Whiskey, topped with Punkin Ale and garnished with a dehydrated apple slice. 

Virtual poetry reading to be held Oct. 5

 Wor-Wic Community College is inviting the public to a free virtual poetry reading with Marcus Wicker on Tuesday, Oct. 5, at 7 p.m., via Zoom.

Wicker is the author of “Silencer,” winner of the Society of Midland Authors Award, and “Maybe the Saddest Thing,” selected by D.A. Powell for the National Poetry Series. He received a 2021 National Endowment for the Arts Creative Writing Fellowship, a Tennessee Arts Commission Fellowship, Pushcart Prize and the 2011 Ruth Lilly Fellowship. Wicker’s poems have appeared in “The Nation,” “The New Republic,” “The Atlantic,” and “Oxford American.” He is the poetry editor of “Southern Indiana Review” and an associate professor of English at The University of Memphis in Tennessee.

WREP Luncheon set for Sept. 21

Wicomico Retired Educational Personnel will host their fall luncheon on Tuesday, Sept. 21, at the Salisbury Moose Lodge on Snow Hill Road.

Feature Friday concerts planned Downtown

Salisbury University faculty and staff display their musical talents throughout the fall semester during Feature Friday concerts in Downtown Salisbury.

Performances this semester are:

Oct. 8 – Red Letter Day, featuring Suzanna Mallow (Event Technical Services), Colleen Clark. (Music, Theatre and Dance), and alumnae Andrea Jones and Becca Doughty.

Nov. 12 – Matt Michaud (Music, Theatre and Dance).

Dec. 10 – David Raizen (Information Technology) and Jerry Atkins.

All performances are free and held from 6 to 7 p.m. at The Brick Room, 116 North Division St. Attendees must be 21 years of age and over.

Showdown pickleball tournament Oct. 1-3

Pickleball players of all skill levels will step on the court to compete in the Shore Showdown pickleball tournament at Billy Gene Jackson Sr. Park on Oct. 1-3.

Open to players ages 19 and older, the tournament offers three divisions to accommodate various ability levels. 2.5-3.0 is the recreational division, 3.5 is the intermediate division and 4.0-5.0 is the advanced division. Each skill division is then broken up by age group.

The Women’s and Men’s Singles event will take place Friday, Oct. 1. Men’s and Women’s Doubles events will be played on Saturday, Oct. 2 followed by Mixed Doubles on Sunday, Oct. 3.

Winners of each age group in each division will be awarded medals for first, second and third place finishes. Registration is open until Sept. 26. The $50 per person fee covers entry for up to three events.

   5K Run/Walk for Wor-Wic to be held Oct. 2

The Wor-Wic Community College Foundation is sponsoring a 5K Run/Walk, along with the 2021 Law Enforcement Team Cup Challenge, on Saturday, Oct. 2, at 9 a.m., at the college campus on the corner of Route 50 and Walston Switch Road in Salisbury. Check in and registration begin at 8 a.m.

The 5K run and one-mile walk are open to the public. The Law Enforcement Team Cup Challenge is open to employees of any law enforcement agency who will compete in teams of two to three runners for the Law Enforcement Team Cup, currently held by the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office.

All 5K runners and law enforcement team members will be eligible for first place overall male and female trophies, as well as medals for the top three male and female finishers in eight different age categories.

The first 100 registrants will receive an event shirt. All participants are invited to stay afterward for the awards ceremony, refreshments, music and fun activities for the whole family.

Bingomania returns Saturday, Sept. 18

Bingomania, the Eastern Shore’s largest bingo cash prize event, returns to the Wicomico Civic Center on Saturday, Sept. 18, for the first time since February 2020.

Doors open at 5 p.m. for early-bird games, and regular games begin at 7:30 p.m.

Admission to Bingomania includes all regular and special games, including the Jumbo Jackpot Game. Regular game payouts are $500, while special games will pay out $1,000. The Jumbo Jackpot Game pays a maximum of $10,000, depending upon attendance.

Attendees can increase their chances of winning and help a local food bank at the same time by bringing three nonperishable food items to the event. Those who do will receive three additional cards for the first early bird game.

Tickets are $45 per person in advance and $55 per person at the door; fees may apply to ticket prices.
