Studioworks gift shop welcomes new artists

Posted

Dorchester Center for the Arts is pleased to welcome new artists to the on-site Studioworks gift shop. Studioworks features an array of handmade items created by talented artists and artisans, from original paintings to hand-thrown pottery to one-of-a-kind jewelry to hand-woven baskets. Studioworks also sells stained glass, fiber wearables and a wonderful selection of note cards and books by local authors about art and the Eastern Shore.

Always full of newly created items, the shop displays local and regional artists, and selects pieces for sale through a juried process to ensure high quality. New arrivals include The Weyward Sisters Soap and Candle Company. This team consists of Beth and Rachel, two sisters who have had lifelong interests in the art of handmade. Beth designs and makes the candles. When she is not crafting things to scent the home, she is a Wicomico County second-grade teacher. She lives with sons and husband and cat, Loki, in Salisbury. Rachel formulates and makes the soaps. When she is not cooking up batches of soap and sugar scrub, she is a knitting pattern designer. She lives with her children and husband and pets in Sharptown.

Their featured products include items like Pumpkin Brûlée Sugar Scrub, Snowy Shimmer body oil, and foaming bath whip, plus handmade cold-pressed soap and soy candles in a variety of holiday themes.

Another new vendor, Laura Rankin, offers up a plethora of charming needle-felted ornaments and holiday figures. Laura has been creating art in one form or another all her life. She taught herself needle felting and wet felting about 10 years ago. Her professional art career began in the 1970s, first as a courtroom illustrator for the CBS affiliate in Buffalo, New York, then as an illustrator in editorial at The Buffalo News in Buffalo. After that, she moved into her 30-year career as an award-winning children’s book author and/or illustrator of 20 books.

New artists and artisans are always welcome. If interested in being considered for the Studioworks gift shop, please contact receptionist@dorchesterarts.org.
