Dorchester Center for the Arts presents a varied lineup of classes and workshops for February, including:
Youth Introduction to Comic Book Illustration with Lee Reece
Students will learn proper page layout as well as character creation in this two-day workshop. The materials list will be shared with students after registration. Ages 13 and older are welcome. $40 DCA members, $55 non-members for the workshop, set for Friday, Feb. 3, from 4:30-5:30 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 4, from 4-5 p.m.
Sunday Photography Workshop with Robert Sullivan
This workshop features a Blackwater sunrise, as well as the opportunity to capture beautiful winter colors. Sunrise is a great time for two reasons: It’s when the wildlife is most active, and the quality of light is amazing and constantly changing. And February there will be both a sunrise and a full moon setting. This workshop will provide information on photographing wildlife at Blackwater, as well as tips and techniques for photographing a sunrise. You’ll see – and photograph – the Blackwater refuge in ways you haven’t before. $25 DCA members, $60 non-members. The workshop will take place Sunday, Feb. 5, from 6:30-8:30 a.m. The meeting place will be provided upon registration.
Fun and Funky Furniture with Terri Griffin
This two-day workshop will teach the art of up-cycling furniture. Through the magic of ideas, paint, glue and other materials, a shabby old piece of furniture will be transformed into a one-of-a-kind piece of art. Students learn how to decoupage and embellish with a variety of items, then seal the piece with polyurethane to last a lifetime and more. Students should bring a small piece of furniture; all other supplies will be provided. Participants take home their completed piece of furniture as well as an instructional printout of the process for future reference. Suggested furniture pieces: end table, small cabinet or a small chair. The two-day workshop will be Friday, Feb. 17, from 4-8 p.m. and Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. $125 for DCA members, $160 non-members.
Additional offerings include drawing, ceramics, dance and more. To register for these classes, or additional activities at the Dorchester Center for the Arts, stop by 321 High Street, call 410-228-7782 or visit online at dorchesterarts.org. DCA is open Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday, noon to 8 p.m., and Second Saturday until 8 p.m. Programs at DCA are supported by the Maryland State Arts Council.
