Pleasant Day wreath prepared for Memorial Day event in Cambridge

Posted

CAMBRIDGE - The American Legion Post #91 annually conducts a wreath-laying ceremony in memory of military men and women who have given their lives in defense of their country. It is held at Long Wharf every Memorial Day at 11 a.m.

Pleasant Day Medical Adult Day Care veterans attend this event every Memorial Day and in 1990 placed the first Pleasant Day poppy wreath at the memorial. This year, Anne King Whaples, the daughter of Stanley King, made and donated a poppy wreath for Pleasant Day veterans to place at the War Memorial at Long Wharf.

Ms. Whaples has a long family history with veterans and the American Legion. Her father served overseas in World War II as did his father before him in WWI.  Returning from WWII, Mr. King became very active in American Legion Post Hesson-Snider #120 in Denton and went on to serve as state commander of the Department of the Maryland American Legion.

Ms. Whaples said, “Through my dad’s devotion to his country and the American Legion, I have always had a warm spot in my heart for vets. I was very pleased to be asked to make a poppy wreath to commemorate Memorial Day.”
