Hospital auxiliary awards scholarship

Posted

The Auxiliary of Dorchester General Hospital recently awarded a scholarship to Monica Loeffler. Loeffler is currently attending Chesapeake College and is in her last semester to complete the course for certification as an X-ray technologist.

The auxiliary is now in its 65th year of service to the community. Originally established to assist with patients, the role has changed along with hospital regulations and policies.  However, the auxiliary still benefits the community by raising funds to respond to hospital requests for assistance in assuring that Dorchester County residents can receive care with up-to-date, state-of-the-art equipment.

The funds are raised primarily through the Robin Hood Thrift Shop and the Hospitality Shop that was previously located in the original hospital. The Hospitality Shop will not be reopened at the new freestanding medical facility, due to space and security constraints.

Besides providing funding for equipment, the auxiliary instituted a scholarship program many years ago. It is aimed primarily for students entering the medical profession or those already in the medical field who wish to obtain further education and certification.  Applications for the scholarship may be obtained at the Robin Hood Shop, or via a request by mail to the auxiliary at P.O. Box 554, Cambridge, MD 21613.

Times have changed since the auxiliary was first organized in the early 1900s, but the auxiliary has kept up with the changes and expects to continue serving the community for many years to come.

Local residents are invited to consider becoming an auxiliary volunteer. Information on becoming a volunteer and an application can be obtained at the Robin Hood Thrift Shop at 416 High Street, Cambridge.
