PRINCESS ANNE — When former University of Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks bowler Thashaina Seraus (Oranjestad, Aruba) suffered a heartbreaking loss to Nebraska along with her teammates at the 2017 NCAA Bowling Championship, she probably figured she’d never be back.

But on Wednesday (April 7) the three-time All-American was there again, this time as an assistant coach hoping to help lead a squad to the NCAA title that eluded her as a bowler.

Seraus is in her second season at Arkansas State University, having joined the staff in September of 2019. The Red Wolves won three tournaments this season and were ranked No. 2 in the country in the March National Tenpin Coaches Association rankings.

“It’s an amazing feeling to contribute to a team that made it to the NCAA Championship especially through a rough year where everything is unknown (because of COVID-19),” Seraus said. “There were a lot of ups and downs, but it’s all worth it. We already achieved one of our goals — to make it to the NCAA Championship now on to the next to make it to the Championship Match to have an opportunity to bowl for the National title.”

The Red Wolves opened competition in the double-elimination bracket with her former Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference rival Delaware State, and picked up a 2-0 Mega Match victory. They will next face another familiar foe for Seraus in North Carolina A&T State at 4 p.m. also on Wednesday.

“We have a talented group of girls that are ready to represent ASU as best as possible,” Seraus said. “As a coach, I hope we can make the right decisions in crucial moments to achieve the ultimate goal. I want to thank Coach Kostick for giving me the opportunity and trusting me to be part of the ASU coaching staff. It’s an amazing experience where I learned a lot and gained valuable knowledge in the world of collegiate bowling. I never thought being a coach would be so hard, but at the same time it’s fun and amazing to see a group of young girls grow to become great student athletes on and off the lanes.”
