For the third straight year, a unique breed of mini yellow waterfowl will descend on Cambridge to race for fun and prizes, while helping raise dollars to do good in the community.

The Cambridge Rotary Club and Rescue Fire Company have once again partnered to present the event, this time transforming the natural slope of Court Lane into an RFC created water-slicked flume on Saturday, Sept. 9, from 3 to 6 p.m.

Three grand cash prizes of $500, $250 and $125 will be awarded, gift certificates from local businesses will be up for grabs, and in two kiddie pools, youngsters can "fish" for ducks and earn fun rewards.

Musician Ellie Guzman will provide live entertainment, with festival food and refreshments available from RFC and Kona Ice.

While ducks may be the day's star attractions, additional critters will arrive courtesy of the Salisbury Zoo and Bay Animal Rescue.

Extra kid fun comes via a bouncy house, basketball and Dorchester County YMCA activities. The Dorchester County Health Department, library and other community organizations will also be on hand.

A special sneak preview of RFC's eagerly awaited holiday train garden will be presented, too.

The number of race heats taking place will depend on the number of ducks purchased, according to the event chairperson, Rotary's Phil Reed.

Ducks are still available to be entered on race day at $5 for one and $20 for five, and can be ordered by calling Reed at 443-521-0100, Dawn Cook at 410-251-2758 or Mike Wheatley at 443-521-4070, who can also answer questions about the four levels of larger scale sponsorship available.

For $100, Wood Duck sponsors receive two ducks and a corrugated sign. At $250, Teal level sponsors receive three ducks and a corrugated sign. Those giving $500 are Mallard sponsors and will receive five ducks, a banner and a company display spot.

Canvasback sponsors, at $1,000, receive 10 ducks plus a banner and company display spot.

Artistic duck lovers can receive an outlined duck "canvas" to complete for their $25 donation.

"The more money raised, the more good we can do in the community," Reed said. A dedicated substitute teacher in Dorchester County high schools, he gets to see some of that good firsthand, as Rotary helps fund numerous student scholarships, assisting with pursuing higher education.

Rotary funding also recently helped Dorchester Career and Technology Center students travel to Atlanta to participate in the annual nationwide Skills USA competition. (Skills USA advisor and 2020 Dorchester Teacher of the Year Chief Charlene Zinnel will be Rotary's September meeting featured speaker.)

And Rotary contributed to the cost of eight students attending an annual leadership conference Reed organized as part of his role as advisor to Cambridge-South Dorchester High School's Rotary Interact Club.

In other community works, Rotary devotes funds and hands-on help to build ramps and provide additional home repair services to area seniors through the Chesapeake Housing Mission.

When the World War I Memorial Fountain at Long Wharf fell into disrepair, Rotary stepped up several years ago to help get it back up and running.

And each Memorial Day, Rotary efforts are responsible for helping raise the moving patriotic panorama Flags For Heroes, where people can pay tribute to service members and others rising above the call of duty for their community.
